Mixing in a brief rundown of ramen’s historical roots, the film gives viewers an in-depth look at the culture surrounding this unique and beguiling dish. This is a documentary record of 15 months in the lives of Japan’s top ramen masters and their legions of devoted fans.
What to expect?
A great time if… you are a Ramen Heads! Over the year Ramen has become a global phenomenon. It has moved from the curiosity from the East to become a highly addictive success. For many devoted fans, including myself, Ramen is an obsessive comfort food. This movie is dedicated to us.
A Ramen Heads is a difficult concept to grasp for an occidental. We tend to think of ourselves as food enthusiasts but we are nowhere near the craziness of the Far East, especially Japanese people. If we are Food Enthusiast, they are Food Worshippers (like the extreme case of this blogger who spent 20 years trying 5600 instant noodles). Nowadays, Ramen is particularly famous in the Foodie community, so it is no surprise to finally see a movie released about this wonderful dish.
Ramen Heads is directed by Koki Shigeno an experienced TV documentary director. Amongst many things, he has previously worked on the Sushi Master Mr Araki, The Soba master Mr Kotaka and the famous French chef Alain Passard. Ramen Heads is his first movie to date (let’s just hope he comes up with more great ideas).
(Fun fact: His work on Ramen Heads has been highly influenced by the legendary movie Tampopo.)
Osamu Tomita, the stars of this documentary, is the king of Ramen in Japan. If you have never heard of his name before you are probably not about that Ramen Heads life. Osamu’s Tsukemen are a must try (worth up to 3 hours of queuing) that should be in your To-Do-List of things to eat before you die. For your reference, Osamu Tomita is the chef at Tomita Ramen in Matsudo, ranked first Ramen joint in the highly regarded Ramen Database supleks.
In a TV world dominated by Sushi and Wagyu, RAMEN HEADS seems to be the warmth and generous Ode to Ramen that we have all been waiting for.
